Jerome, AZ: Once again, expect a wonderful night in Jerome. Have dinner, stroll the streets and visit the galleries, sip some wine, sample some treats, savor the art…maybe even spend the night at one of the delightful hotels or bed and breakfasts. Jerome is once again the place to be on the first Saturday of the month.

Visit Margo Mandette at The Old Jerome High School to get a glimpse of her new African princess ceramic sculptures. Black clay with Raku accents create a simple and striking form. And, of course, Mark Hemleben is already beginning his fall series of Jerome paintings that never cease to amaze and impress.

Dawn Sutherland has two new Grand Canyon paintings and has just finished the Rim-to-Rim hike Sept 22-27. First time for Dawn will be a one-day Colorado River painting trip from Page to Lee’s Ferry. First husband Stan will be at the studio at The Old Jerome High School the night of art walk while Dawn tries her first plein air paint out in Pinetop, AZ.

Kim Hoshal has just opened her photography studio in The Old Jerome High School along with her musician husband William. From stunning landscape to detailed macro work, Kim has an eye for capturing nature’s perfect moments. This inspired duo will be a welcome addition to the High School’s talented group of artists. Composer, arranger, and performer Bill Hoshal draws influence from the musical worlds he inhabits, including jazz, classical, ambient, and commercial. Originally trained on saxophone and woodwinds, his award-winning music has been featured in jazz festivals and on the concert stage both here and abroad. Stop by to welcome some of Jerome’s newest additions.

Stahlkraft, the Hill Street gallery on the road to the Jerome Grand Hotel, is pleased to feature images of the Old West by local artist “Bhash.” His meticulous eye for detail projects a near photographic depiction of the stories he tells using the oldest medium, charcoal. During the Month of October, specials on GiClee and lithographic prints will apply to Bhash’s work. The artist will be present at the Jerome Art Walk.

This month Altai Leather has another run of guitar straps with earth tone inlaid designs and is working on some brighter colored hand-tooled belts. Kelly will be on hand, as usual for the personal touch from the artist.

Recently named one of the Top 25 galleries in the nation, Pura Vida Gallery continues to host amazing openings for local, regional, and national artists. On the evening of Jerome’s October 4th Art Walk, Pura Vida Gallery is proud to host the debut of new work by San Francisco copper artist Greg Hessel. Greg is a master coppersmith who hand forges copper candlesticks, candelabras and copper vases. Hand forging of copper involves enormous amounts of heat and hammering using a variety of tools and techniques inspired by iron forging and jewelry making. Each one of a kind piece is hand wrought, creating eccentricities, which add to their uniqueness and beauty. For over thirteen years, Greg has created designs with an organic quality as well as high refinement. Greg will be on hand from 5-8pm on the evening of the Art Walk to discuss his work and debut his newest creations. In addition, Pura Vida Gallery will host its infamous champagne and chocolate reception for the attendees.

The Jerome Artist’s Co-Op will be continuing with its current show featuring Megan Dean. This lively gallery features the work of 40 local artists, many of whom will be on hand on October 4th to discuss their work.

New Book about Jerome October 19th, 2008 at 9:17 am by Leslie Connell

Jerome, AZ: The rugged mining community of Jerome has thrived by the hard work and hard play of tough men and women pitted against an equally hard mountain. William Murray solicited funding for the Black Hills mining camp from his uncle, a New York lawyer and financier named Eugene Murray Jerome, who reportedly was not interested. However, his independent wife was delighted at the prospect and raised $200,000 in development capital for Murray. In 1882, Frederick F. Thomas, Jerome’s first postmaster, named the mining camp “Jerome” in honor of the family. Jerome boomed, ultimately reaching a reported population peak of 15,000 in the 1920s, then dwindling to a ghost town after the mines closed. In 1967, the town was designated a National Historic Landmark, and today it is a flourishing artist community, as well as a motorcycle and travel destination.

Author Bio: Local author and historian Midge Steuber has been enchanted with Jerome’s colorful history and free spirit from the moment she first visited the mountain community. For this volume, Steuber has spent countless hours immersed in the vast archives of the Jerome Historical Society assisted by the boundless knowledge of Jerome archivist Ronne Roope. The nonprofit Jerome Historical Society operates the Jerome Mine Museum on Main Street. Purchase this book by clicking here.

goldensteinhershman1.jpgSedona, AZ-August 31, 2008 from www.Sedona.Biz - Certain places move the soul. Throughout September Goldenstein Gallery, a name synonymous with style and innovation, will be celebrating the majesty of the enthralling world around us with “The Color of the Land.” This riveting exhibition features the magnificent vision of a dynamic group of artists: Landscape painters Rick Balch, DJ Hershman, Martha Slater and Oliver Polzin; patina on metal artist Lynn Rae Lowe and the glorious hand-carved fine art furniture of Eric Freyer, and spectacular hand painted silk scarves by Jacqueline Jackson. These artists deftly capture elements of the natural landscape and bring them inside.

Known for his spectacular fine art furniture Eric Freyer’s stunning ‘Tulip Table and Chairs’ are all individually designed out of hand carved quilted maple. Freyer doesn’t remember a time when he wasn’t working with wood. These gorgeous pieces are both elegant and dazzling to the senses.

The inventor of “Pixelism,” DJ Hershman’s evocative paintings capture, with texture and color, the dramatic spirit of diverse environments, each painting created with a series of dental tools.

Lynne Rae Lowe’s stunning patina on metal landscapes resonate with spectacular vibrancy and translucency.
Martha Slater is known for her impressionistic, contemporary paintings. Slater’s vivid use of color boldly mimics the power and beauty that she sees in the natural environment. A master artist in many styles and techniques, she combines her talents to create vibrant work in many mediums including whimsical and mystical “Story Sticks.”

Lynne Rae Lowe’s stunning patina on metal landscapes resonate with spectacular vibrancy and translucency. “I believe in surrounding oneself with images that uplift the soul and make the spirit dance,” says Lowe. She refers to her work as “inner landscapes.”

Rick Balch’s work deftly captures the ever-changing light and shadow of the red rocks of Sedona. His use of light on the natural landscape mesmerizes his collectors.

Oil Painter Oliver Polzin’s impressionistic work is influenced by the landscapes of Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Kandinsky. He is moved by the color and relationships around him and uses the most expressive colors he can conceive of to express the wonder he sees.

Jacqueline Jordan Jackson, whose family was one of the original pioneer families in Sedona, has worked in nearly every medium from ceramics to oils. Jackson’s family donated the “Art Barn” to Sedona Art Center, and she grew up in what now is the Apple Orchard Inn (which was built by her family). Her newest creations, vibrant hand painted silk scarves, luminously capture the brilliance of the floral images she depicts. All of her beautiful designs are inspired by nature.

The public is invited to meet these engaging artists and other local artists at the opening night reception for “The Color of the Land” on Friday September 5 from 5-8pm during the First Friday Sedona Gallery Association Art Walk. Well-loved local musicians Jack and Ray Reeves will be performing at the gallery and there will be a wine tasting by local vineyard Alcantara.
